It’s a stark contrast with the first 12 years when b/w 1986 and 1997 the man was still raised by people with a rope, engaging the crowd in the process of making rather than spectating, a slogan still very important in Burning Man’s organization communications today, but less in the event’s reality.

Dust & Illusions font
This is the official font used for Dust & Illusions, that’s the one used for the title on the poster underneath.
Poster of Dust & Illusions
Burning Man effigy. 1993
The Burning Man effigy is wearing a smiley on that picture. It’s a real picture taken by Heather Shirkey in 1996 in the middle of the night. John Law and friends placed a smiley face inside the head of the man, with an intermittent light that would turn it on and off. The smiley was lit up in the middle of the week randomly, of course all those still awake noticed, and Larry Harvey asked for the smiley to be taken down right away… it wasn’t good in those days to make fun of the symbol. Still isn’t today. You’ll notice on the higher resolution version of the poster that the title Dust & Illusions is placed on top of a satellite picture of the encampment created by the 50,000 participants, in the form of a open circle.
